How to choose the right shipping company

Shipping companies are all vying for the moving dollars set aside by the millions of people and businesses each year that must either ship cargo or prepare for an international home removal. Shipping services have been expanded to offer solutions aimed at the individual who needs to send small shipments overseas as well as those who require a shipping container to accommodate all of their belongings. The shipping services industry is so big today that anyone can find the kind of services for which they are looking – whether they have delicate medical equipment to ship, exotic animals or potted plants – anything can be safely and securely delivered to any part of the world.

Shipping companies all use the same kind of containers for shipping goods. The type and size of the shipping container that you choose for your cargo will be based on the amount of goods you have to ship, on your budget and they kind of items that will be included in it. Containers come in several sizes that range from 8 feet to 40 feet in length. The larger the container the more expensive it will be, but the more cargo you will be able to pack into it. As a point of reference, an average-sized apartment with three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and a dining room will generally require a 20 foot container. A house on two levels will require double that space. If, however, you decide to place a lot of furniture into storage or to sell your stuff and only take the essentials, then your shipping container needs will naturally change accordingly.

If you find that you do not have enough cargo to rent a full shipping container for the overseas removal of your belongings then you can always request to share space with someone else heading in the same direction. In fact, if you hire a competent freight forwarder to work on your account, they will most likely arrange for such a solution without even consulting you. However, there are other options aside from shipping containers. You can also simply pack your belongings into boxes and have them shipped on a palate to their new home. While this option might certainly be more cost effective than any other option, you must realize that your cargo will have very little protection on an open palate. Aside from the packing you provide, they will be exposed for the entire journey, which will mean a greater risk of your cargo sustaining damages.

When you start looking into which shipping companies to hire for your removal, it is best to find out before hand just what kind of shipping containers or palates they offer and what would best suit your needs. By understanding the limitations and advantages inherent with each form of container, you will better be able to decide which you need. Unless the shipping company you have in mind is able to provide you with the kind of shipping container you need, you should not sign a service contract with them.

Looking into shipping companies should be among the first things you do when preparing an overseas removal. As long as you choose the right one, you will have an easy time with your relocation or with your freight needs.
